Sandy Hokanson As far as I'm concerned, painting the birds, wildlife and landscapes found in the upper midwest is the only way to spend my time. Of course, hiking and birdwatching for reference material in the hardwood forests and Mississippi river bluffs not far from my Rochester, Minnesota home is also a very welcome pastime. Birdwatching is always interesting. I keep lists of the different birds seen from my studio window and use them as reference material for future paintings. My backyard birdfeeders and wildflower gardens are always a source of entertainment as birds vie for their turn at the free food. Antique stoneware is another interest interest of mine. A brother introduced me to the charm and variety of old Red Wing stoneware which was produced in the Red Wing, Minnesota area in the 1800's and early 1900's. Once commonly used in every home, these lost treasures are still found at farm auctions, estate sales, and yard sales, much to the delight of the buyer. I generally create only one or two "Red Wing" paintings each year. I exhibit them annually at the Red Wing Collector's Society Convention each July in Red Wing, MN. The majority of my original works are painted in acrylics. I usually work small, rarely larger than 12 x 18. In between working on major paintings, I paint several "mini-originals," using watercolor pencils and/or acrylics. The spontaneity and quickness of these small works lets me test ideas for future full-size works. My original paintings, prints and notecards are offered for sale at several Minnesota galleries. I am an active member of the SEMVA cooperative gallery in downtown Rochester, Minnesota and maintain a display of my work there. I do accept occasional commissions - contact me for more information. |
